How To Repair Runout On A Walker Turner Drill Press
I was out once more in the shop today merely having a blast getting into my ol DP. Before I went likewise far I wanted to get an idea on the run out at the chuck. I chucked a long socket in lieu of a calibrated blank, I effigy a socket is pretty dang close to directly. And with my dial indicator and mag base I prepare about to notice out what we are seeing hither. As you can see I started out at zero. No the pic is not upside downward, just the dial indicator, please don't ask, it just ended upwardly that manner! The feeler is to the right of the indicator upwards confronting the chucked socket. The magazine base is sitting on the press tabular array.
After a full turn of the chuck I get about .006 thousandths run-out at its highest point.
Smashing for a 70 plus twelvemonth old press. I am debating on whether I should supplant the quill bearings or not. I can be happy with 6 thousandths.
I then started to remove the upper quill gear comprehend, (Pardon my ignorance on proper terminology)
Photo to a higher place, begetting and bushing still in height cover.
Photo below, removing the jump assembly that helps the quill recover in the upward position.
Above Photo: The spring adjuster sitting on the press table after I removed information technology from the side of the press in photo higher up this 1, I am actually careful not to let the bound spring out of the cover, I just have a feeling information technology would be a pita to put dorsum in. I secured a piece of tape over it afterwards this photograph was taken.
Once the spring adjuster was removed, it allowed the quill to drop with out resistance. I had to drop the table downwardly every bit far as it could go to let room for the quill to drop out from the bottom and out of the style.
I had to soak the column with WD-40 to get the tabular array to budge downwardly, I whacked it a few times with the prophylactic mallet to go it to loosen up. I need to be really careful, even bandage iron volition crevice with a safety mallet. One time the table dropped, the quill came downwards and out of the head.
I have a sinking feeling though, that I should have removed the chuck earlier the quill. I would have had more leverage to work on the chuck while it was still in the press. Not too mention, I can't detect a mode to remove the chuck even, and I don't know if I should replace the chuck or non.
And here we go, a semi taken apart Walker Turner. Non much left but to remove the main cast iron components off the main column and get set up to clean them up and pigment.
Thanks for post-obit me along so far on my very first restoration. This is addictive, I will be doing more than in the future for sure. I have made upward my listen, my store will somewhen concur all old machinery. Made in America, heavy metallic, it'southward going to be quite the journey.
